What is a BASIX certificate?

A BASIX (Building Sustainability Index) certificate is a mandatory NSW planning requirement for new residential developments, alterations and additions. It assesses three areas: water efficiency, energy consumption and thermal comfort, and must be lodged with your development application. Thermal comfort can be demonstrated using either the NatHERS simulation method or the BASIX DIY method.

BASIX or NatHERS: Which do I need in NSW?

If your residential project is in NSW you will need a BASIX certificate. Depending on your design and the compliance pathway chosen, the thermal comfort component may be satisfied using a NatHERS assessment. We can handle both of these items for you.

Outside NSW, BASIX doesn’t apply and NatHERS is the standard pathway.

Thermal Comfort: ensures year-round comfort with minimal artificial heating or cooling by modelling how building design responds to climate through insulation levels, window performance, shading, orientation, and ventilation pathways.
